Blazon

the language of identity

Modern designs infused
with antique DNA

The “coat of arms” emerged as a means of uniquely identifying individuals and families during the middle ages in Europe and the British Isles.

c. 1200, when armor technology was advancing, knights began wearing helmets that protected, yet hid, their faces during battle. In efforts to signal their identities on the battlefield, knights began to decorate their shields with what became known as a “coats of arms”. Each coat of arms was unique to a particular knight (or to a particular clan or family, as was also becoming popular) and consisted of some combination of charges (symbols, motifs, animals), shields, crests, crowns, mottos and more. Coats of arms can range from very complex (i.e. one of each of the aforementioned elements) to more simplified versions that would maybe only incorporate one or two elements (i.e. a charge plus a motto is the most commonly seen combination during the Victorian era on signet rings and wax seals).

Within the realm of heraldry, Blazon refers to the language used to describe and decode the armorial bearings within a given coat of arms.

Blazon is the language of heraldry, and thus, the language of identity.

Inspired by actual antique signet rings and wax seals bearing heraldic motifs and mottos from the Georgian-to-Victorian eras (roughly early 1800s to early 1900s), the Vulpecula Blazon collection are original designs lovingly infused with the DNA of their antique ancestors.

Blazon explores the expression and celebration of your unique self and journey in today’s modern world. The symbolism behind many time-worn and beloved heraldic mottos and motifs reflects the lifestyle, values, beliefs, ideas, people (and creatures!) many of us still hold dear today. These very special pieces possess the ability to commemorate, empower, encourage and inspire those who wear them.

We like to think of the pieces in the Blazon collection as less-permanent tattoos, in that they are wearable works of art that tell a story. Blazon speaks the language of identity to tell your story.

Blazon pieces are specially handmade to order – carefully, locally and ethically with recycled gold.
